A treble hook is fitted to balance lures, ice spoons and other baits requiring secure hooking from several directions. A replacement hook must preserve lure balance and avoid restricting its action.
Size for lure and fish
An oversized treble can suppress a small lure; an undersized hook may hold larger fish less securely. Compare overall gape, shank length and wire gauge, not only the stated number.
Sharpness and attachment
Inspect every point before fishing and after bottom contact. The eye or split ring should move freely but have no gap through which the hook could escape.
When should it be replaced?
Replace a hook that is blunt, corroded, bent or has damaged finish. For a different presentation, compare double hooks, which may snag less in some situations.
