Whitefish (Coregonus albula) is a cold-water lake fish belonging to the salmonid family (Salmonidae). It is valued for its mild taste and is a popular catch among anglers in various regions. Although small, whitefish are highly active and require specific fishing skills and tools.

Habitat

Whitefish are common in temperate climate zones and typically inhabit deep, cold, and well-oxygenated lakes. In Lithuania, they can be found in lakes such as Drūkšiai, Tauragnas, and Dusia. These fish avoid warm, shallow waters, so during summer they remain in deeper parts of lakes where the temperature stays low.

Feeding Habits

Whitefish are predatory fish, though their diet mainly consists of:

  • Zooplankton, such as daphnia, cyclops, and mosquito larvae.

  • Small aquatic insect larvae.

  • Occasionally, small fry or the eggs of other fish.

They feed most actively in the morning and evening, with their peak activity occurring in early autumn as spawning season approaches.

How to Fish for Whitefish

Fishing for whitefish (also called selavia) requires knowledge of their habits, habitats, and appropriate fishing techniques.

Time and Place

  • Best time: Early morning or evening. In late autumn, whitefish may also be active during the day.

  • Location: Deep areas of lakes (10–30 m). In summer, they are usually found near the thermocline — a layer where the water temperature changes sharply.

Fishing Gear

  • Rod:
Use light rods with a sensitive float or special short rods (60 cm to 1 m) designed specifically for whitefish fishing.

  • Baits:

    • Live baits: mosquito larvae, daphnia, or small baitless hooks.

    • Artificial baits: micro spinners, silver spoons, or small vertical jigs.

  • Rigs:

    • Whitefish rigs: multi-hook systems with light weights and small baits.

    • Winter rigs: vertical jigs or special ice-fishing baits.

Winter Fishing

Ice fishing for whitefish is extremely popular. During the cold season, they gather in larger schools near the lake bottom. Anglers drill holes through the ice and use small hooks with live bait or vertical jigs to catch them.

Practical Tips

  • Use an echo sounder to locate fish schools and determine their depth.

  • Be patient — whitefish are cautious and may quickly leave if disturbed.

  • Avoid noise, as these fish are sensitive to environmental changes.

Interesting Facts

  • Whitefish grow quickly, but their average weight rarely exceeds 200–300 grams.

  • Spawning occurs in autumn (October–November) when the water temperature drops to 4–6 °C.

  • They play an important ecological role, helping to regulate zooplankton populations in lakes.

Fishing for whitefish is not only an exciting experience but also a way to connect with the natural beauty of Lithuanian lakes. With the right equipment and knowledge of fish behavior, you can successfully enjoy whitefish fishing — and the delicious taste of a fresh catch.
