Fishing lines for float fishing

Float fishing line should be fine enough for sensitive presentation yet dependable when striking and playing fish. It is important to distinguish the main line from the hooklength and balance their breaking strains.

Monofilament, braid or fluorocarbon?

Monofilament is manageable, forgiving and commonly used as a main line. Braid offers low stretch and high sensitivity, while fluorocarbon is often chosen for a less visible, abrasion-resistant hooklength.

Diameter and strength

Match diameter to fish size, snags, hook and the capacity of your float. Line that is unnecessarily thick can restrict natural presentation; line that is too fine leaves little safety margin.

Main line and hooklength

Select main line for the reel according to spool capacity and casting needs. Hooklength material is normally finer so a snag does not cost the entire rig.
