Fish bait is used to attract and retain fish in the fishing area. It works in three main ways:
Smell and taste – baits often have strong smells, such as fishmeal, shellfish, spices or fruit. These smells spread through the water and stimulate the fish’s curiosity and feeding instinct.
Visual effect – some baits are colored or create a turbidity effect (such as a smoke cloud) that attracts fish from further away.
Texture and composition – baits can be loose, sticky or even shaped into balls. Different ingredients, such as breadcrumbs, corn, molasses or seeds, sink slowly or rise to the surface, creating a natural feeding ground.
Baits are especially important when fishing for peaceful fish such as bream, tench, carp or roach, as they create an attractive feeding area and increase the number of bites.
